From Simple Prompts to Practical AI Systems

What we covered, in short. If you were in the room, this is the part worth practicing.

1. The AI Architect Mindset

Don't start with which tool. Start with the friction: what's slow, repetitive, or takes more concentration than it should. Then look past it. You notice the report takes three hours. The reason might be that the information is spread across four places, or that nobody has agreed what the report is for. Fix the three hours without asking why and you get a faster version of the same problem.

2. The AI Maturity Ladder

AI use develops in stages. The early ones are about what you type. The middle ones are about what AI can see, so your notes, transcripts and documents. The later ones are about other people using it without you. Each stage fixes something the one before couldn't, so skipping usually backfires. Find your stage and take one step.

3. Asking Versus Instructing

Generic answers come from thin requests. You know things about your situation that never make it into what you type: who'll read it, what you already tried, the constraint that rules out the obvious answer. So before you type, write down what you know that the model doesn't. That list is most of your instruction.

4. Fixing a Weak Answer

When the first answer is poor, most of us rewrite it ourselves or give up. Read it again and name what's wrong instead. Generic? It needed more context. Confident but slightly off? It's guessing and hasn't said so. Thin? It stayed on the surface. Close? It needs a push, not a rewrite. Each of those has a follow-up you can type in a sentence.

5. Running Your First Experiment

Pick one friction from your own work. Build the instruction, run it, find the weakest part, fix that one thing. Keep it small enough to finish in a sitting, and use real work, because a made-up example won't have the missing context that makes this hard. Then map it: where you are now, what the AI step does, what gets easier once it does.
